description abstractThe Test Code for Solid Fuels specifies standard methods for a determination of those chemical and physical properties which serve as criteria of the value of these fuels when burned in any type of furnace.
It is recognized that in turn solid fuels includes such energy sources as coal, wood, agricultural waste products such as bagasse, corn cobs, etc., refuse and industrial wastes. The broad scope of properties involved in establishing a test code to cover all solid fuels is, in many respects, beyond the capability of establishing definitive measurements to cover all. However, since coal predominates as the major source of solid fuels, this code is directed toward establishing criteria for evaluating it as a solid fuel. Application of specific portions of the code to other solid fuels where they are applicable is subject to agreement as to any instrument or methods which are to be employed. Also, reference is made to other standardizing groups that have developed methods of measurement specifically for some of the materials named. Use of these instruments is subject to agreement among the parties involved.
Agreement shall be reached as to any instrument or methods of measurement which are to be employed and are not prescribed by the Code. Any such deviation from the prescribed rules shall be fully explained in the test report.
Because the American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM, through its Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, has formulated many standard tests and specifications for solid fuels which are in common use, it has been considered advisable to adopt these standards with a few modifications.
It should be recognized that ASTM maintains a continuing surveillance over its standards, and revisions are made from time to time. Therefore, those ASTM standards printed or referenced in this Test Code should be considered as revised to conform to the latest accepted ASTM standards.
